The James R Barker - Last Coal Shipment to BC Cobb Plant

The buzz was on yesterday about the James R Barker and it's last shipment of coal to fuel the BC Cobb Plant marking the end of an era in Muskegon as well as Michigan as we switch to cleaner energy in the near future.

Eagle Eye Photography of Muskegon was called in to document the occasion.  Eagle Eye Photography has come on very strong with both their commitment to excellence as well as the desire to show Muskegon in a different light.  You'll find stunning views of our large ships, our natural beauty and people doing amazing things.  We're proud of the work they are doing visually to tell the story of Muskegon differently.

Things are changing.  There are still a lot of questions out there about the changes we are seeing, but progress is being made and we'll be here showing things you can be proud of and enjoy!

A Positively Muskegon Flashback - The Gamper

While I have been around a good long while with hockey in Muskegon, as time goes on....things change, people change and somethings just kind of seem to fall through the cracks.  It's the price of progress I suppose, but not long ago, I stumbled across a tape I had recorded because I for once had the foresight to know, it would be very hard to find and probably lost to time.  I was right.  Couldn't find in anywhere and was surprised actually to find the old reel to reel tape I had it on.

Not having a reel to reel tape machine anymore.... I had to do some quick thinking and reached out to a long time friend and mentor Gary Hunt, who does have a reel to reel machine and was kind enough to put it into digital format for me, so I could share it with the hockey fans from all seasons past.

Enjoy, The Gamper!

The Captain! Meet Bob Priefer of the SS Milwaukee Clipper

You know, I have done an interview or two over the years, and I don't brag about my work....I mean....it's a job...ya know....but once in a while, I strike a pot of gold.  Most often, that pile of gold is of their later years....maybe up there quite a ways, and there is a dignity to older people....there is a sense of accomplishment, humility and genuineness to them that tells you they are at peace.  It's a remarkably great thing to tap into....carries a lot of hope for a guy in his mid 40's I tell ya.

I was invited down to tour the Clipper with my friends from Eagle Eye Photography a month or so ago, and then....Randy and Tina Claypool had the idea that maybe I should sit down and talk to the Captain.  He set it up, and here it is.  What I hope you hear...and more importantly what I hope your kids hear is how selfless people of this generation were.  First class guy all the way.

I hope this stands as a historical piece, and one day is part of the media history of Muskegon.

The Frauenthal Follies! This Saturday Night at the Frau!

The historic and beautiful Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts recently celebrated it's 85th anniversary and coming up this Saturday, you'll see the second go around of the Frauenthal Follies!

Bob Scolnick will be your host as the community comes together to see who's got what talents, who can pull together an entertaining skit, who can play guitar, saxophone, dance, tell jokes....what have you!  It's a fun variety show, and quite reminiscent of the days gone by when the town follies was all there was for entertainment.

It's got a deeper purpose here in Muskegon however, this year the Frauenthal Follies is out to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Muskegon.

Opening in the Spring of 2015 The Boys and Girls Club of Muskegon is "On a mission to inspire and enable all young people , especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens" according to their web site.  It's a proven model across the nation and to have a chapter here in Muskegon is a real feather in the cap, and a process that began 15 years ago.  Click on the logo for their website!

It's great to have a cause, but it's also great to see your fiends and neighbors be willing to take the stage at the Frauenthal Theater to showcase their talents....or at very least....try.  It's Muskegon entertaining Muskegon.

I had a chance to sit down with Linda Medema at the Frauenthal to talk a little bit about the show, tickets and some of the other great upcoming events at the Frau!  It's important to be a part of their shows as a community and to make sure that the theater stays open and enjoyed for years to come.

If you'd like tickets to the show, click on the link below and support the Frauenthal Follies and the Boys and Girls Club of Muskegon!

Meet Reverend Robert Teszlewicz From "The Center"

Muskegon Heights has a new center designed for support of the LGBT community and it's called "The Center".  The Center is located at the corner of Peck and Sherman and is a place for people to gather to communicate, learn, find support and basically be themselves.

I have been a Facebook friend with the Reverend Robert Teszlewicz for quite sometime and his encouragement, kindness and genuine caring for people...all people, especially those of us who are quite often leaned on to be the source of "encouragement" for others is a very welcome change from the normal Facebook stuff.  It's a great place to be in life, able to hand out a compliment or share a smile and really, expect nothing in return, but the occasional message of "keep it up" is always appreciated.

I stopped in to The Center to meet Robert, an ordained Catholic Apostolic Priest to learn more about his mission, his history serving the LGBT community and what he faces here in Muskegon.  Robert shares some stories of what he's faced over the years as well as the realities of today, and the future.

It's not about some agenda, it's not about someone pushing their beliefs on you, your family or friends.  It's about equality.  I was proud and honored to meet up with Robert and hear his story.

If you'd like more information on The Center, click on the logo below, it will take you to their Facebook page.  If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine too, but please....respect those who might be a little different than you.  It's not too much to ask and we all search for equality at some point in time.
